Training camp for Red Wings starts up Aug. 29

The Weyburn Red Wings will be holding their training camp from Aug. 29-Sept. 3 at the Colosseum.

From 9-11 a.m. on Aug. 29 will be registration and a workout will take place at 1 p.m. On Aug. 30 and 31, practices will be held at 7:30 p.m. The final cuts will be made on Aug. 31.

"We will go on Wednesday," Red Wings Head Coach Dwight McMillan said. "Wednesday will be a big cut day."

The team will take a day off on Sept. 1 and go back to work with another practice on Friday, Sept. 2 and the annual Red and White game will go on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Over the off-season, the team lost about half of their roster to graduating players and need spots filled in the line-up.

"We have about 10 veterans returning," McMillan said, adding he and his coaching staff will need to fill about 13 roster spots throughout the week.

McMillan is looking to improve his defence this year at camp. In the off-season, several of his good defencemen graduated and he needs new talent to fill their shoes.

"We need defence, we need to strengthen there," McMillan said.

He isn't too concerned about the offence. He has a few prospects coming up with a lot of potential to score goals, but he isn't ruling out the idea of putting more talent up front.

The Red Wings are allowed to pick up players from all over Canada and the U.S. Currently they have scouts looking at players in Minnesota.

McMillan is expecting about 80 players to show up to this year's camp and compete for the 23-man roster.

Each year McMillan likes to get about 80 players so he can make four teams of 20 to play each other. It keeps the players from repeatedly playing each other.

The Red Wings pre-season will begin on the road in Estevan on Wednesday, Sept. 7 and will return home for their first home game on Thursday, Sept. 8 against the Estevan Bruins.
