The 2005-06 school year started off at the Weyburn Comprehensive School with the rush of registration on Aug. 26, with over 500 students starting the school year. Classes began on Aug. 29, and a highly successful academic awards night was held on Wednesday. Welcome Week began on Sept. 2 with a pancake breakfast and the theme of Comfy Day. Welcome Week continues all this week, with a school dance on Friday. The SRC did its first fund-raiser of the year as they sold drinks at the Saskatchewan Centennial celebrations on Sunday at the exhibition grounds. On Friday, Sept. 9, the SRC will launch their biggest fund-raiser, the annual magazine sales. This program raises most of the money necessary to run the many extra-curricular programs at the school. It has been very well supported in the past, and hopefully the community of Weyburn will continue this support. The campaign will run for about two weeks. On Monday, Sept. 12, the annual fall Parents' Night will be held at the Comp. Parents are invited to the school at 7 p.m. to experience a mini-school day for their student. Teachers will give brief summaries of the courses and marking as the parent moves through the evening. Parents are reminded that they are always welcome to come to the school or phone in regards to any questions they may have. On the sporting scene, the Eagles football team will play their first league game on Thursday, Sept. 8, in Regina. Due to the labour problems in Regina, the game has been changed from Taylor Field, so the schedule has also been changed. The first home game will be Saturday, Sept. 17 when Usher comes to town. This weekend, the senior boys volleyball team is hosting a tournament starting at 3 p.m. on Friday continuing until 6 p.m. on Saturday. Teams from Rouleau, Balgonie, Moose Jaw Central, Lumsden, Yorkton, Estevan and Swift Current will be in attendance. The junior boys are in a tournament in Yorkton this weekend, and the Comp golf team are tuning up for the district playoffs with a tournament in Midale on Friday. The districts are in Carnduff on Sept. 14. The girls' soccer team have their first league games in Moose Jaw on Saturday, and Caronport is here on Sept. 15 for their first home game. All soccer games are at Jubilee Park. |
