The Weyburn Red Wings were able to raise their RBC Royal Bank Cup Championship banner on Saturday night while splitting a home-and-home series with Yorkton last week to open their regular season.

Weyburn picked up one point in the standings with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Terriers on Friday.

The Red Wings got off to a quick start with Dan Erlandson scoring in the first period to give Weyburn an early 1-0 lead.

Yorkton came back with two goals in the second period and Peter MacDougall tied the game for Weyburn in the third period.

In overtime, the only shot Weyburn goaltender Scott Bruno faced got past him. The Terriers Justin Menke scored in overtime to hand Weyburn their first loss of the season.

After watching the Terriers raise their Credential Cup banner, the Red Wings got their revenge. They came home, raised their national championship Royal Bank Cup banner, and picked up a 4-2 victory on Saturday night.

Yorkton was ahead 2-0 halfway through the first period, when the Red Wings scored four unanswered goals in the first and second periods.

The goal scorers for Weyburn were Jordan Stevenson with two goals, Justin Schmidt and Andrew Baron each scored one goal.

Bruno started his second game in net for the Red Wings and didn't have a very busy night. He faced 20 shots and had two goals against him.

After two games, Weyburn is in a three-way tie with Notre Dame and Estevan on top of the Sherwood Conference standings with three points.

Currently, Jordan Stevenson is sitting in five-way tie for second place in league scoring with two goals, two assists for four points after two games.

This week the Red Wings will be participating in the SJHL/CIS September Showcase in Saskatoon from Sept. 22-25.

They will start the showcase with a game against the Kindersley Klippers tomorrow. On Saturday, Sept. 24 they will be playing the Nipawin Hawks and finish the showcase with a game against the Battlefords North Stars.
