The Weyburn Junior High "A" girls volleyball team had their third successful tournament in a row over the weekend, as they came home with gold medals from the tournament they attended in Swift Current. Play began slow on Friday, with two wins over Lucky Lake and a split with a tough Frontier team. The Cobras went on to a nine-win one-loss record in the round robin. The playoffs began with a two-game win over Abbey to advance to the final against Frontier. The girls won the first game fairly easily, but had a more difficult second game, using their bench more liberally. The game ended 27-25 in favour of Weyburn. The Cobras have entered three tournaments this year so far, and won gold in all of them. "We tried some new things and new positions this weekend. The girls responded well to the challenges," said coach Dean Leach, adding they are looking forward to the upcoming tournament in Balgonie on Saturday. "Our bench played well and our first pass improved drastically. We had some tremendously strong kills from some of our vets, with some very good setting and decent floor movement and defence," said Leach. The WJH A boys volleyball team did not play this weekend, but will be competing in the Comp 'B' tournament this weekend. |
