The Weyburn Review was honoured for its excellence in coverage of the community as the newspaper placed in the top three in eight award categories for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association (SWNA). The awards were presented at the SWNA's annual convention, held over the weekend in Saskatoon. In addition to the awards, Review publisher Darryl Ward was elected to the SWNA's board of directors. In the awards, news editor Greg Nikkel placed first for Best Post-Secondary Education story, for his story on the new partnership between the Southeast Regional College and the University of Regina. Nikkel also received a second place for Best Business Editorial on the Weyburn CO2 project, and a third place for Best Editorial writing. The Review received two second-place prizes for Best Front Page and for Best All-Around paper in its circulation class. Former reporter Kevin Berger won third place for Best Sports Photo, for his photo of a swimmer at the Saskatchewan Summer Games. The Review won third place for Best Editorial Page, and former reporter Tim Tororey won third place for Best Saskatchewan Cultural Story for his feature story on painter Barry Lautner. |
