Two municipalities in the Weyburn region received word they were approved for grants under the Canada-Saskatchewan Municipal-Rural Infrastructure Fund. The Town of Yellow Grass received funding of $110,350 towards the cost of a lagoon cell project for the town's waste water system. The total cost of the project is $220,700, of which the municipality pays half the costs. The RM of Surprise Valley in the Minton area received a grant of $119,438 towards a road reconstruction project worth a total of $238,877. The two communities were part of the latest round of approvals of $51 million for projects around the province, including 29 transportation projects, 25 waste water and water supply improvements and four solid waste projects. Before receiving final approval, community projects must undergo a review process under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, and all mitigating factors have to be address during the construction phase. Participating communities must also contribute half the project cost, and the federal and provincial governments split the balance of the cost. The federal and provincial governments have agreed to invest $76 million in municipal infrastructure projects over the next four years. |
