WJH Cobras A girls win fourth tournament in row

The Weyburn Junior High Cobras "A" girls volleyball team is on a roll, and the season is just starting.

The girls brought home their fourth tournament gold medal in a row, as they won a tournament in Balgonie over the weekend.

The team came out of the round-robin with a record of four wins and two losses, with the losses both to Holdfast.

In the first set of playoff games, the Cobras met up with the Lumsden Grade 9 team, and Weyburn won in two straight. Advancing to the next playoffs, they met Balgonie's Grade 10-11 team, which took three matches to decide the winner.

Coach Dean Leach said these were the most exciting matches of the tournament, as the Cobras won the first one, Balgonie won the second, and the third was won by Weyburn 15-11.

This put the Cobras girls into the finals against Holdfast, the team that had beat them in the round-robin; this time, the Cobras defeated them in two straight, 25-15 and 25-17, to win the tournament.

Asked how his team did at the tourney, coach Leach said, "We actually didn't play that well in the morning, but in the afternoon we played pretty well. Our strengths were in hitting and making defensive plays."

The WJH girls will have the Thanksgiving weekend off, and their next volleyball action will be in Regina at Winston Knoll on Oct. 14-15.
