Harvest in SE now 92% done due to warm weather

By SHAWN SLAGHT of the Weyburn Review

Farmers in southeast Saskatchewan continued to keep pace with those in the southwest with continuing warm, sunny weather for most of the past week, as combining reached 92 per cent done, along with six per cent lying in swath or ready for straight-combining.

The southeast is well ahead of the rest of the province, which is at 69 per cent, with a further 23 per cent lying in swath or ready for straight-combining.

There was very little moisture in the past week, except for some showers over the weekend, and some frost and wind damage was reported. All rainfall amounts were under five millimetres in the southeast.

The crops that are 95 per cent done or more include winter wheat, fall rye (both at 100 per cent), spring wheat, peas, lentils, triticale, mustard and chickpeas.

The area is starting to dry out as the warm, dry weather continues, with 44 per cent of crop reporters saying crop land topsoil moisture is short or very short, and 54 per cent saying moisture is adequate, down from 76 per cent last week.

On hay and pasture land, moisture is rated as adequate on 51 per cent, down from 68 per cent last week.

In addition to frost and wind, crops in district 2B were reported to have damages from deer and migratory birds.

As producers are finishing up harvesting, they are getting busy with other fall work such as hauling hay and straw bales, spraying fall fertilizer, burning flax straw, fall tillage and livestock work, such as cleaning out corrals and weaning calves.

Some fall-seeded crops in the area have emerged, and crop reporters say they are looking good so far.

For producers with crop insurance, production declarations for this year's harvest are due by Nov. 15, along with post-harvest claims and requests for extension of insurance. Late forage claims can be paid up until Nov. 15, subject to a 25 per cent reduction.
