This week is National School Sport Week and Education Week at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. Today, Oct. 19, the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) will hold a "White-Out Day" to bring attention to the number of people injured and killed by drunk drivers in Canada each day. The "Grim Reaper" will make appearances in classes throughout the day and will randomly kill off students by painting their face white with a black tear. They will change into all black, with a note pinned on explaining the circumstances of their collision. At 3:15 p.m., the "dead" will gather on the front lawn in front of the B doors, and will lay under white sheets to show how quickly the deaths accumulate. They will be there until the students have left school for the day. On Thursday, Oct. 20, a volleyball clinic for Grade 6 boys will be held at the Comp, and on Friday, students are encouraged to bring their family members for lunch in the Cafetorium between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. On Thursday evening, the Sunrise School Division will hold its staff recognition banquet to honour years of service. The Comp will hold a post-secondary information night on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. The schools to be in attendance include the U of S, U of R, U of Winnipeg, Campion College, Luther College, Lakeland, SIAST with campuses at Kelsey, Palliser and Wascana, Medicine Hat, and the Northwest Law Enforcement Academy. This week began with a potluck supper on Monday in the Cafetorium, attended by the school team members, coaches, parents and staff. There was no school on Tuesday as teachers were at an inservice in Regina. The Comp debate team will take part in its first tournament of the year on Thursday at Regina Campbell. Over the past weekend, all four volleyball teams were in action, the football team played its second-last home game and the cross-country team competed in Biggar. Both senior volleyball teams won their respective tournaments, the girls in Swift Current and the boys in Moose Jaw. The junior teams participated in tournaments in Estevan and Milestone but did not reach the finals. The girls soccer team defeated Caronport in a double-overtime shootout last week and now advance to the provincials in Lloydminster at the end of the month. They are also involved in the Moose Jaw league playoffs. The football team came back in the second half, but still fell short 31-20 against Regina Miller. Of the cross-country runners, Atley Roettger had the best finish of the WCS students, placing 22nd in the senior boys category. In the coming week, the senior boys are in a tournament at Regina Campbell, the junior boys will be in Lumsden, and the seniors girls will travel to Saskatoon. The final home game of the year for the Eagles football team will be on Saturday at Darold Kot Field when the Notre Dame Hounds will hit the gridiron at 1 p.m. The second half of the Red Coat Volleyball Series against Estevan takes place in Estevan on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The games are tied 3-3 with Weyburn holding a 14-point lead in total points. |
