Weyburn Comp debaters win medals at first tourney

Members of the Weyburn Comprehensive School's debate team took part in their first tournament of the year at Regina Campbell on Thursday. Jordan Rederburg and Steve Schuck won gold in the novice category, and Jordan won silver in the speech competition. Krysta Buchanan, along with a student from Regina LeBoldus, was chosen to represent southern Saskatchewan at a tournament in Winnipeg on Dec. 1-6.

The National High School Sports Week potluck supper was attended by close to 200 people. The SADD display for Education Week, to conclude White-Out Day, was very effective, and the Comp band and choir gave performances at the Weyburn Communithon on Friday. The students were also able to raise $1,125 in their Penny Wars for the United Way.

On Tuesday, Nov. 1, there will be a Post-Secondary Information Night in the library, starting at 7 p.m. It is an opportunity for parents and students to see different post-secondary schools. Everyone is asked to come and get their questions answered.

The schools which will be in attendance include the U of S, U of R, U of Winnipeg, Campion College, Luther College, Lakeland, SIAST Kelsey, Palliser and Wascana, Medicine Hat and Northwest Law Enforcement Academy.

The completion of the Red Coat Volleyball Series concluded in Estevan on Tuesday, and the Comp Eagles football team will have a playoff game in Regina after defeating Notre Dame 31-14 on Saturday at Darold Kot Field. The Eagles play on Thursday against Yorkton at Taylor Field, with the game starting at 5 p.m.

The girls soccer team will be at provincials in Lloydminster this weekend, and there will be a senior girls volleyball tournament hosted in the Comp gym on the weekend. The senior girls lost in the bronze medal match in Saskatoon over the weekend.

The junior boys volleyball team lost in the semi-finals in a tournament in Lumsden, and the junior girls failed to advance past the round-robin at the Weyburn Junior High Cobras tournament on the weekend. This upcoming weekend the junior girls will be in Midale and the senior boys will travel to Balgonie.

This weekend the Comp School will host the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) Showcase. The convention is for the delegates, but the public are invited to see the auditions of performances for the 2006-07 Concert Series. The performances are on Friday at 7:15 p.m., and on Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. These are sample performances of 20 minutes each, and will take place in the Cafetorium.
