WCS Eagles girls soccer take home bronze medal

The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles girls soccer team came home from Lloydminster on the weekend with bronze medal for the SHSAA 2A provincial championships.

The key game was their very first match against Humboldt, a team that the girls have already faced once this year.

"That was a team that beat us in a tournament in Yorkton this year," said coach Scott Benning.

Weyburn got off to a quick start against Humboldt with Britt Pegg scoring in the first half, but halfway through the second half Humboldt evened up the score to 1-1.

Then late in the game, Julie-Anne Paslawski received a cross pass from Britt Pegg to score the game-winning goal as Weyburn won 2-1 and guaranteed themselves a berth in a medal game.

"The girls played absolutely great soccer," Benning said.

The girls knew from their previous experience with Humboldt that they were a physical team, so Weyburn continued to attack and counter Humboldt's physical play to pick up the win.

Weyburn's second match was against Moose Jaw Central, a team they have faced numerous times in league play throughout the year.

It was a close game, but Moose Jaw Central was able to beat the Eagles 4-2.

"We were missing a few players due to injuries," Benning said referring to injuries suffered by Raeanne Leffler, Julie-Anne Paslawski and Camille Megenbir during the Moose Jaw game and the previous game against Humboldt.

The Eagles had a couple of good chances early in the game, but were unable to convert and at half time Moose Jaw Central was leading 2-1.

In the second half, Moose Jaw put in their third goal of the game and Weyburn was never able to make up the two-goal difference.

With the loss, the Eagles moved on to face Regina's Robert Usher School in the bronze medal game, which the Eagles won 3-1.

Raeanne Leffler, who was still recovering from an ankle injury, scored from a shot just outside of the box to give Weyburn the early 1-0 lead. Robert Usher was able to score late in the half to even the score at 1-1 and the game was tied going into the second half.

"The second half we slowly started to dominate," Benning said.

Leffler scored her second goal of the game on her injured ankle, which would turn out to be the game winner. Nichol Thomson scored Weyburn's third goal to solidify the Eagles' bronze medal win.
