Eagles sr. girls volleyball repeat victory in Lumsden

The Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles senior girls volleyball team traveled to Lumsden over the weekend and won the tournament for the second year in a row.

They started the 14-team tournament with a record of 11 wins and one loss in the round robin, putting them in first place in their pool. The Eagles moved on to play Estevan in the quarter-final.

In the quarter-final, Weyburn made short work of the Estevan team, beating them in two sets, 25-11 and 25-13.

Weyburn faced a difficult Lumsden team in the semi-final, but were able to pull off the victory. In the first set, Weyburn easily won 25-15, but fell short on the second set 23-25 to force a third set to decide who would move on to the final. It wasn't easy but the girls squeezed by the host team 25-22 in the final set to face Kelvington in the final.

For the sixth year in a row, the Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles girls volleyball team made it to the final game at the Lumsden tournament and they didn't disappoint. They got off to a quick start against Kelvington, winning the first set 25-19. Kelvington fought back to win the second set 25-23 to send the championship game into a third and final set. In an extremely close game, Weyburn pulled out the victory, winning the final set 29-27.

Eagles player Heidi Smith was voted to the tournament all-star team this weekend for her outstanding play.

The top servers for Weyburn were Ashley Betker, Maegan Biss and Vanessa Wick, who all made 100 per cent of their serves. The Eagles had a remarkable team serving percentage of 92 per cent.

Weyburn's top hitters in the tournament were Jaynel Mann with a 55 per cent kill efficiency and Sarah Croft with a 58 per cent kill efficiency. The top blockers were Katie Unraw with 13 stuffs and 17 rejections and Croft with five stuffs and 17 rejections.

The next action for the girls will be on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Swift Current for the Small Cities Regional playoffs. Following the playoffs, will be the 5A SHSAA provincial championships on Friday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 19 in Weyburn.
