Four boxers from the Soo Line Boxing Club went to the Saskatchewan Provincial Boxing Championships in Regina on Nov. 12 and 13 and came home with gold medals. Ajay Bell won the Cadet A 37 kg Novice class by a walkover. Jerod Kopeck won the Cadet B 70 kg Novice class by a walkover. Atley Roettger won the Junior Open 75 kg class by a walkover. Roettger will be on Team Saskatchewan competing at the Junior Nationals (under 19) in St. Hyacinthe, Que. in January. Roettger fought in a make-up bout against Senior 75 kg boxer Clayton Twardzik. It was a hard-fought battle with Twardzik winning by a slim margin. In the Junior Novice 69 kg class, Adam Maurer received a bye on Saturday and then, on Sunday, went on to fight the winner of Saturday's bout between Thomas Sherwood and Michael Karr. Maurer squared off against Karr. The match was even and the computer scoring had the two fighters tied with 28 points each. It then went to a count-back of all scoring blows of the boxers and Maurer came out the winner of the bout. The Weyburn Club ran into some bad luck on the weekend. On Saturday night, the van of one of the coaches was stolen. Some of the boxers' personal equipment was in the van along with some of the club's equipment. |
