The Royal Bank Cup champion Weyburn Red Wings received their championship rings on Nov. 8, at the first intermission of the game versus the Notre Dame Hounds at the Colosseum. Unfortunately, the rings were not enough to inspire the team as they lost to Notre Dame 2-1. All of the scoring was done in the first period and Weyburn struggled to get the tying goal. Newly acquired player, Cleve Len, got his first goal as a Red Wings as he was the only Weyburn player who as able to beat Notre Dame goaltender Blake Bashor. Taking the loss in net for Weyburn was Russel Monette, but he would get his revenge with Melville being his victim. After a close game which ended up in a loss earlier in the week, Monette came back on Friday at the Colosseum and stopped 41 shots to pick up the shutout in a 2-0 win. Although Weyburn was outshot 41-33, Trenton Moor and Sean Bassingthwaite were able to get the puck by the Millionaires goaltender for the win. "We played a strong, hard checking game," said head coach Dwight McMillan. McMillan added that the players did a good job of sticking to their game plan and they waited for scoring chances, which paid off. Also, with playing an aggressive style of hockey, the Red Wings showed a lot of discipline. The Red Wings took six penalties, however, the majority of them were stick infractions. The final game of the week for the Red Wings was on Saturday at the Colosseum against the struggling Kindersley Klippers. Weyburn outshot Kindersley 51-27, yet the Red Wings were only able to pick up a 3-3 tie. The Red Wings were up against rookie goaltender Ryan Niezner. McMillan thought his team played well, but Niezner played a great game to hold the Red Wings to a tie. The Red Wings had a couple of chances to win the game but a couple of goals were disallowed. One goal was called back because of a penalty on Peter MacDougall for goaltender interference, and the second goal was waved off because the play was offside. Weyburn's next game will be against the Ice Wolves at the Colosseum on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and McMillan is expecting fireworks after the last meeting between these two teams. "We had a rough, drag 'em out game in La Ronge last week," McMillan said. The Red Wings will also be venturing at Estevan on Sunday to meet the Bruins. Off the ice, there were two announcements made that affect the Weyburn Red Wings. Russel Monette, who picked up a shutout last week, was named goaltender of the week for his performance for the period ending on Sunday. The 19-year-old goaltender played two games, only allowing two goals, a goals against average of 1.01 and a save percentage of .969. The other news was the announcement of McMillan as one of the coaches for the CJAHL prospects game in Yorkton on Wednesday, Dec. 7. McMillan has had a long history with the SJHL and is one of the winningest coaches in CJAHL history. "I believe it is a great honour and I am really looking forward to it," McMillan said. The CJAHL prospects game will showcase some of the best talent Canada has to offer at the Junior A hockey level. |
