VIP and Labour Council to hold a candlelight vigil

The Violence Intervention Program, along with the Weyburn and District Labour Council, will be holding a Candlelight Vigil and walk on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grace United Church.

The Vigil will begin at the church were Mayor Don Schlosser and Weyburn City Police Chief Rod Horsman will be welcoming everyone, and then a walk down Third Street for two blocks, with the candles, will take place.

This Candlelight Vigil is to remember the shooting at the University of Montreal in 1989.

It was 16 years ago on Dec. 6 that Marc Lepine, 25, entered the University of Montreal's School of Engineering building, walked into a classroom and ordered the men to separate from the women. He then asked the men to leave the classroom as he lined the women up along the wall. Lepine yelled profanities at the women and began shooting.

Fourteen women at the school were killed that day and 13 other women were wounded.

"The Vigil is a remembrance of the women who died on that day but it also has evolved into a walk that supports the creation of a violence-free community," said the director of the Violence Intervention Program Patt Lenover-Adams.

By attending the walk, Lenover-Adams hope that people will take half an hour of their time to support people living in Weyburn being able to live full, free and empowered lives in a safe, vibrant, healthy and peaceful community.

The Violence Intervention Program and the Weyburn Labour Council believes that violence against women and children exists in our community and must be publicly acknowledged as a problem. Denial, on every level, is one of the greatest obstacles to eradicating family violence.
