Pee Wee Bison Res. win bronze in M. Jaw tourney

The Weyburn Bison Resources Pee Wee squad participated in a 10-team Tier II tournament in Moose Jaw over the weekend, going 2-1 in the regulation round and earning their way into the bronze medal game, which the Bison won with a 9-1 victory over the Saskatoon Bobcat Snipers.

As the tournament draw unfolded, the Bobcat Snipers were forced to play the bronze medal match immediately following their final regulation round victory over the Saskatoon Red Wings.

The Red Wings handed Weyburn their only loss of the tournament on Saturday night, despite being severely outplayed by the Bison who outshot the winners by a three-to-one ratio.

When the Bison took to the ice to play for bronze, they too, had seen action mere hours earlier when they defeated Martensville 8-2. The Bison showed no sign of fatigue as they caged the Bobcats.

The successful weekend required spirited performances from the entire Bison roster, which outscored their opponents 27-10 over four contests. Worthy of special mention, however, are the following performances.

Mackenzie Metheral scored in every game and had six goals on the weekend, including a hat trick in the Friday night win over the Saskatoon Rough Raiders.

Defenceman Justin Hippe was credited with two goals on the weekend, while fellow blue-liners Louis Schnell and Brendan Ryan also tallied points.

Josh Forsgren and Kelton Hoium scored hat tricks against Martensville which helped them reach their weekend totals of five and six goals respectively. Brady Mack also scored twice in the bronze medal victory over the Snipers.

Lyndon Lumb received player-of-the-game honours twice during the regulation round, while Brayden Leslie earned that distinction in the bronze medal game thanks to his three-point performance. Metheral was selected game star in the Bison's opening game of the tournament.

Other strong performers who weren't prominent on the score sheet, but chipped in with a point here and there, while playing strong defensively were Jesse Watson, Kelly Oberkirsch, Jhett Folk, Zane Creighton, Devon Stephanson and Josh Lees.

Andrew Rubin and Curtis Bourassa shared the goaltending minutes and they allowed only 10 goals in four games.

Another trip to Moose Jaw is in the offering this weekend for the Bison. The first order of business is to complete the final period of a game which was suspended after two periods of play, back on Nov. 25, because of ice problems. Weyburn trails 4-2 in that game.

The Bison and Warriors will then play another league game on Saturday, Dec. 17 in Moose Jaw.

On Sunday, the Bison will host the South Central League-leading Estevan Bruins who will likely enter the game undefeated.
