Over the weekend, the Weyburn Atom AA WIT Wings played in the Lumsden Lions tournament on Friday and Saturday, reaching the A final, and a league game on Sunday. Weyburn opened the Lumsden tournament on Friday afternoon with a dominating 11-3 win over the Regina Stars. Braeden Pyne got the win in goal for the Wings. In the first period, Weyburn scored six times to take an early 6-1 lead. Ketter Hoium opened the scoring for the Wings and scored his second of the game with assists from Regan Nagy and Braden Mellon. Reece Williams scored Weyburn's third goal and Donovan Lumb, with an assist from Cole Rooney, scored the team's fourth goal. Rounding out the scoring in the first period were Mellon with an assist from Jack Flaman and Piwarski with an assist from Rhett Williams. Hoium scored Weyburn's seventh goal assisted by Reece Williams and Nagy scored with an assist by Mellon. Reece Williams also scored in the second frame with assists by Rooney and Lumb as the second period ended with a 9-3 lead for the Wings. Hoium and Reece Williams each had unassisted goals in the third period as the Wings made the final score 11-3. On Saturday, the Wings took on their rival Estevan Bruins. Estevan jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead after the first period with Nicholas Pouliot scoring the only Weyburn goal. With the Wings down 5-2 heading into the third period, the Wings came back to tie the game at seven in third period. Scoring for Weyburn in the second period was Cody Robertson unassisted. In the third period, Jack Flaman, Cameron Evans and Rhett Williams had unassisted goals and Ketter Hoium had a goal assisted by Nicholas Pouliot. After 60 minutes, the two teams went to a five-man shootout. Weyburn scored twice with Estevan only beating the winning Wings goalie Carver Krafchuk once. Scoring for the Wings in the shootout were Robertson and Rhett Williams. Weyburn advanced to play the host Lumsden Lions in the "A" final. The game was a back-and-forth contest with the host team coming out on top 3-2. Cole Rooney, assisted by Reece Williams, scored in the first period to give Weyburn an early 1-0 lead. Rhett Williams had an unassisted goal as the second period ended in a 2-2 tie. On Sunday, the Wings were back in the friendly confines of the Tom Zandee Sports Arena where they hosted the Regina Kings in league play. The Wings were tired after their late game in Lumsden on Saturday, but had enough gas in the tank to beat the Kings 5-2. Braeden Pyne picked up the win in goal for the Wings. Cameron Evans, assisted by Kolin Piwarski, and Reece Williams, assisted by Donovan Lumb, scored in the first period to knot the game at two. Ketter Hoium opened the scoring in the second period for the Wings with an assist from Rhett Williams and Hoium scored twice to bring the score to 5-2. Assisting on Hoium's first goal was Cody Robertson and Regan Nagy assisted Hoium's second goal. Weyburn will be back in action this weekend as they take part in the 2007 Powerade Atom AA Hockey Classic in Regina. The Wings' first game will be on Friday against Melville. |
