Huskies from the Don Smidt dog team from Wisconsin
take an opportunity to stretch their legs when the team made
a pit stop in Weyburn on their road trip to Alaska on Jan. 16.
The 16-member dog team was on its way to compete in the Iditarod,
a 1,150 mile dogsled race in Alaska, which starts from Anchorage,
in south central Alaska, and finishes in Nome on the western
Berin Sea Coast that can take 10 to 17 days to complete. The
musher, Don Smidt, is 39 years of age and began exhibiting AKC
Registered Siberian Huskies with his partner Denise Cwiok of
Howl 'n Wind in 1994. Smidt has mushed in Newfoundland from St.
John's to Port Aux Basques and back again, 1,083 miles along
the Ghost Train run, and this is his first year running the Iditarod. |
