Child with matches causes fire

No one was hurt in a house fire that was caused by a child playing with matches and candles on Jan. 16 on Bison Avenue in Weyburn.

Around 7 p.m. the Weyburn Fire Department responded to a house fire after receiving a call from a woman who said her child had been playing with matches and candles. She thought the fire was out, but when the fire crews arrived on the scene to investigate, they were told the fire had started again.

The mattress in the bedroom was badly burned, causing damage on the second floor. No one was hurt as a result of the fire.

Fire Chief Denis Pilon reminds residents that a lesson can be learned from this incident. "It highlights the need to keep children and matches separate," Pilon said. "Put lighters and matches away and keep them away from children and be careful where you place candles.
