SARCAN to recycle old computers, TVs on Feb. 1

The Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop will begin accepting certain electronic items for recycling starting on Thursday, Feb. 1 at the SARCAN depot.

SARCAN has entered into a new service contract with Saskatchewan Waste Electronic Equipment program to divert such items as computers and TVs from the landfill. There is no refundable deposit for these items.

The Weyburn depot will not be disassembling the items, but will accept them for shipping to a facility that will do the disassembling for recycling. There will be no charge to drop the items, but there are guidelines as to what will be accepted and how the public can drop them off.

Items that will be accepted for recycling include computer items, such as CPUs, keyboards, cables, speakers, CRT monitors, flat-screen LCD monitors, personal printers, scanners, combination units and laptops.

Televisions will also be accepted, including CRTs, flat panel units and projection units.

Items that will not be accepted include anything with broken pieces or a smashed screen, batteries, CDs and diskettes, loose printer cartridges, electronics manuals, routers and modems, and telephones and answering machines.

Other items which cannot be accepted include fax machines, projects, commercial printers, photocopiers, cell phones or pagers, palm pilots and blackberries, walkie-talkies, headsets, video games and related equipment, VCRs, DVD players, stereos, record players, home and car audio equipment, Walkmen, MP3 players, any kind of camera, portable or two-way radios, typewriters, home appliances, calculators, and cable boxes and satellite receivers.

As with any large volume of items for recycling, those with large amounts of acceptable items need to phone ahead for a suitable dropoff time, to ensure the depot has the space to take the items.

Items can be brought in during SARCAN's hours, but for heavy or large items, it is suggested to come in first as the depot has equipment available for heavy lifting.

SARCAN is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed from noon to 12:30 p.m. for lunch. Hours on Saturday are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
