January meeting of Town and Country Women held

The Jan. 8 meeting of the Town and Country Women was held at the home of Clara Bell. There were five members and one visitor in attendance with citizenship and legislation on the agenda for the day.

The president Margaret Lukey chaired the meeting. She gave some thoughts on the New Year and if they feel spoiled some of the last year, then take a new leaf and try to do better.

The thought of the day was, "Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together", by Woodrow Wilson. The club's Women's Creed was repeated by the members.

Vie Flaten and Margaret Lukey will be the officers of the nominating committee for the new year. The club also reviewed their bylaws and brought them up-to-date.

New program booklets will be planned and printed. The committee includes Dorothy Dennis, Edith Jacobs, Margaret Lukey, Clara Bell and Kathryn Groshong.

Roll call was: "Something you would like to write your member of Parliament about," and all present contributed to the discussion which was very interesting.

Topics discussed are as follows: For years Canadian troops have been considered peacekeepers - now, however, they are in actual combat in Afghanistan with lives being lost; a place called "Tiny" in Ontario has the purest water - now, this is being threatened with contamination as plans for a landfill are underway at this exact location; the extended time it takes to settle some contract disputes; treatment of special needs children before and after they enter the school system; should the landfill in Weyburn be north of the city instead of south; payments for abuse in residential schools - comparison for discipline measures in that day and age and now; and the importance of the Canadian Wheat Board to farmers and that their voice be heard.

Lunch was served after the meeting by the hostess Clara Bell.
