WJH girls basketball team brings home gold medals

It was a gold medal performance for the Weyburn Junior High School Cobras girls black basketball team as they won a tournament in Stoughton over the weekend.

The girls played two round-robin games, winning them easily, before winning the gold medal final.

"All of the girls played well," said head coach Averyl Knapp. "Morgan Gibson, if there were an award for tournament MVP, she would have won it."

On the boys side, the Cobras "A" team played a game in Coronach on Monday, losing by one point at the buzzer.

Logan Ochitwa made a three-point shot and was fouled at the buzzer, however, it wasn't enough to lift the Cobras past Coronach. Coach Crystal Mantei felt players who had a good game included Mitchell McCallum, Ochitwa and Tanner Stuart.

Overall, Mantei felt her team played well, but they still need to learn to slow down.

"Passing was our weakness," she said. "There were a lot of unnecessary turnovers."

The St. Michael Junior High Tigers "A" girls team were in Radville on Tuesday. Due to publication deadlines, however, results were not available. They will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 7 when they take on the Weyburn Junior High gold team.

The Junior High Classic Basketball Tournament, co-hosted by the Weyburn Junior High and St. Michael Junior High, will be taking place this weekend. The games will begin Friday at 4 p.m. at the Weyburn Junior High and St. Michael Junior High.
