Janis Procyk of Fillmore will be competing in the biathlon event at the Canada Winter Games from Friday, Feb. 23 to Saturday, March 3 in Whitehorse, Yukon. Procyk is a Grade 12 student at "33" Central School and has been competing in the biathlon for six years. This will be her first trip to the Canada Winter Games. "I am looking forward to it and it should be a lot of fun," Procyk said. Procyk is entered into all three of the ladies biathlon events, the 7.5 kilometre pursuit, 12.5 km individual, and the 3X6 km relay. In the pursuit, the skier will shoot at four sets of five targets while being pursued by competitors. The skier who crosses the finish line first wins. The individual has the skier competing against the clock while shooting at four sets of five targets. The skier with the fastest time is declared the winner. The sprint is a shortened version of the individual event. The skier will shoot at only two sets of five target. Once again, the skier with the fastest time is the winner. Procyk has her goals set for the competition and is hoping she can do fairly well at the Games. "I think that the competition will be really high and intense, but I'm hoping to place in the top 15. That would be a good achievement for me," Procyk said. |
