Red Wings playoffs hopes alive with Kindersley loss

The Weyburn Red Wings' playoff lives are now in the hands of the Kindersley Klippers.

The Red and White are currently in fifth place in the Sherwood Conference with 24 wins, 26 losses, three overtime losses and five shootout losses for 56 points, after a shootout win on Monday night. Kindersley is one point behind Weyburn and played the Battlefords on Tuesday.

"We are really proud of the boys, they had two tough roads games to stay in it and they stepped up," said head coach Dwight McMillan.

If the Klippers defeat the North Stars or lose in overtime Kindersley will move into the post season. If Kindersley loses in regulation time, Weyburn will make the playoffs. Due to publication deadlines, the results of the Kindersley game were not available.

The Melville Millionaire were in town on Feb. 6 with the Wings walking away with a 5-2 loss.

Melville opened the scoring in the first period at 6:47 and added two more in the second. Sean Bassingthwaite scored at 18:12 of the second for Weyburn's first goal on the power play with assists from Chad Anderson and Patrick Bordeleau to make the score 3-1 for the Millionaires.

In the third period, Melville extended their lead to 4-1 before Bassingthwaite scored his second of the night on the power play from Trenton Moore and Kyle Haines at 17:20 of the third. Melville added an empty net short-handed goal to make the final score 5-2.

Jason Lindner faced 40 shots, while the Weyburn offence managed 31 shots on the Melville goal.

"Melville just played better than us," McMillan said. "They got some timely goals and we had to fight back."

On Thursday night, Weyburn played the first part of a home-and-home series with the Estevan Bruins in the crucial match-up.

Estevan opened the scoring with a tipped shot from the top of the circle on the power play at 2:55. Weyburn had numerous opportunities to tie the game in the first few minutes of the first period but had a difficult time finding the back of the net.

The Bruins took a 2-0 lead at 14:04 when the initial shot was stopped by Lindner, but Estevan found the rebound and put the puck into the open net. The Red Wings responded at 15:05 when Haines found the open puck in a scramble in front of the Estevan goal and scored. Credited with assists on the goal were Preston Shupe and Kent Lillejord.

Weyburn pulled even at 17:33 when Stephen Simms ripped a hard slap shot from the point which found its way through the crowd and past the Bruins' goaltender. Assisting on the goal were Anderson and Moore.

In the second period, Simms fed Brendon Vertefeuille, the game's second star, with a long lead pass on the power play and he made no mistake, beating the Estevan goaltender on the breakaway at 10:47. The Bruins found the tying goal at 12:42 to end the period 3-3.

The Red Wings gave up three goals in a time span of 1:21 in the third period to the Bruins for a 6-3 lead. Bassingthwaite rounded out the scoring with six seconds left in end the game 6-4.

Lindner once again faced 40 shots in goal for the Red Wings, while the Estevan goal saw 25 shots.

"We played a good hockey game, but we just couldn't finish it off," McMillan said.

After Kindersley lost to the Battlefords on Friday night, the Red Wings were in a must-win situation on Saturday in Estevan and stepped up to the plate, winning 3-1.

Weyburn jumped out to a 2-0 lead with Bassingthwaite opening the scoring at 10:39 of the first period assisted by Jared Smale and Connor Krukowski. Bordeleau also scored in the power play at 14:51 of the first period, with an assist from Lillejord, to extend the lead.

The second period was scoreless, but Estevan narrowed the lead to 2-1 at 13:28 of the third period. Anderson scored an empty net goal at 19:18 on the third period with assists from Bassingthwaite and Moore to secure the win.

The game's first star Kyle McConnell picked up the win in goal for the Wings, facing 34 shots. Weyburn had 24 shots at the Bruins' goal.

Weyburn's post-season fate came down to the final game of the season on Monday in Wilcox against the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Hounds opened the scoring at 1:33 of the first period, but the Red Wings answered with 14 seconds left in the period with a goal by Bordeleau assisted by Smale.

Notre Dame found the go-ahead early in the second until Vertefeuille scored at 1:13 with an assist from Smale. Then Smale scored at 11:22 with assists from Lillejord and Krukowski. The second period ended with the Red Wings ahead 3-2.

At 4:06, the Hounds tied the game but Lillejord put Weyburn ahead at 12:06 with assists from Smale and Vertefeuille. With 26 seconds left in the game, Notre Dame knotted the game 4-4 and overtime solved nothing.

In the shootout, Smale was the first Weyburn shooter and was stopped. The second Weyburn shooter, Bordeleau, put the puck past the Hounds goalie to give Weyburn the 1-0 edge.

Anderson had an opportunity to put Notre Dame away, but was stopped and the Hounds scored on their final shooter and go to extra shooters. Scott Doody was Weyburn's fourth shooter and was stopped. After starting goaltender McConnell stopped the Notre Dame shooter, Trenton Moore scored. McConnell stopped the final Hounds shooter for the win.

"We our best games on Saturday night and the game against Notre Dame," McMillan said. "We played very good defensive road games."

With Anderson left off the scoresheet, it ends a seven-game points streak where he scored three goals and six assists.

The first round of the SJHL playoffs will begin with the selection series and elimination series on Friday, Feb. 16.

Yorkton and Notre Dame will be facing off on Wednesday, Feb. 14 and the loser will be playing in the elimination series against Kindersley or Weyburn.
