Patrick Bordeleau was the overtime hero as the Weyburn Red Wings eliminated the Notre Dames Hounds from the SJHL playoffs on Friday in Wilcox. The Wings will now move on to face the Melville Millionaires, starting this weekend. Notre Dame opened the scoring in game five of the Sherwood Conference elimination series at 3:50 of the first period, but Trenton Moore replied for Weyburn at 7:14 from Chad Anderson. The Hounds scored a goal in the second period of play at 7:11 to take a 2-1 lead. The third period saw three goals scored in 2:09 and seven goals in total. Anderson opened the scoring in the third only 13 seconds into the period. After the Hounds scored at 1:49, Jared Smale tied the game 3-3 at 2:09 with assists from Bordeleau and Connor Krukowski. Notre Dame took a 5-3 lead midway through the third, but 34 seconds after the Hounds' fifth goal, Josh Bray scored at 10:43 with assists from Michael Seib and Brayden Nargang. Bordeleau scored the tying goal with 3:03 left in the game to send it into overtime. "We fought back four or five times and that shows a lot of character," said head coach Dwight McMillan. At 3:52 of overtime, Smale took a shot that was stopped by Notre Dame goaltender Blake Bashor, but Bordeleau found the open cage on the rebound to advance Weyburn to the Sherwood Conference semifinal. "I took a pass from Connor Krukowski and I flipped the puck to Smale," Bordeleau recalled. "It was a high flip and Smale took it with his hand and put it back on the ice. I told him, 'take the shot and I'll go for the rebound'." Kyle McConnell stopped 23 shots as the Red Wings were able to outshoot Notre Dame 29-28. On Wednesday, the fourth game of the elimination series headed back to Weyburn and the Red Wings had an opportunity to get the four-game sweep in a rough game that saw a total of 234 minutes in penalties. "We didn't play our best game," said McMillan. "That will happen and that is why we have a seven-game series." After two periods of play, the Red Wings were already down 4-0 including three power play goals in the first period. The score dropped to 5-0 in the third period until Anderson scored at 3:44 with assists by Moore and Bordeleau. Scott Doody scored his first goal of the series at 16:03 from Kent Lillejord to round out the scoring as Notre Dame won 5-2 to force a fifth game. Jason Lindner got the start in goal has he faced 38 shots as the Red Wings were outshot 38-25. "I have been here for a month and a half and I think as the series adds to the season we are playing more like a team," Bordeleau said. The Sherwood Conference semifinals will begin on Friday, March 2 with Weyburn on the road to face the selection series winners, the Melville Millionaires. |
