Relay for Life launch set to take place on April 21

Weyburn's Relay for Life committee set Saturday, April 21 at the City Centre Mall as the date for their launch.

Details of the program for the launch will be discussed at the next organizational meeting.

During an organizational meeting on Wednesday, the committee expressed how pleased they were with the turnout for the Rally for Relay information luncheon on Feb. 12.

A discussion was held on the concern over congestion of traffic and parking while the teams are setting up the tent city. Other areas such as improved sound delivery at the solitude areas, security and provision of portable toilets were also discussed.

The team recruitment committee reported back from their captains' meeting held on Feb. 20. Eight teams currently have paid registration and 25 teams have been confirmed.

Team captain meetings will be held once a month to touch base with how they are doing and share fundraising ideas. The team recruitment committee will hold a steak night at the Royal Hotel as a fundraiser kick-off.

Points will be awarded to teams participating and proceeds will be distributed accordingly. Teams wishing to get in on the action should call Cara (Aaron) Cugnet for further information. Also the Co-op deck has been booked for Relay for Life on Thursday, May 17.

As a Canadian Cancer Society national requirement, the Smart Shop will be open all night during the relay. Games and activities with cancer-related information are in the plans with the return of Relay Bucks and a silent auction.

The committee is seeking the services of additional massage therapists as the demand last year was more than one could provide. Additional tents and lighting will be required to accommodate them.

Different ideas were exchanged to make the evening a fun and memorable experience for the participants. Music entertainment is being lined up once again for the earlier part of the evening.

Luminary sales have begun, however, Bic will not be providing lighters this year so the committee will have to find another supplier.

Volunteer forms are slowly coming in. Anyone wishing to volunteer some time to the event should fill in a form and indicate the specific time frame they would prefer to work. Forms are available at the Cancer Society office or any committee member.

Survivors wishing to register are also invited to drop in or call the office downtown.

Sponsorship packages have been distributed to some businesses. They will be re-contacted to determine the extent of their interest. Food requirements throughout the night were discussed and will be decided upon at a later date.

The next Relay for Life organizational meeting will be taking place on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Weyburn Credit Union Community Room.
