The Town and Country Women held their regular and annual meeting on Feb. 12 at the home of Edith Jacobs in Weyburn, with seven members present. The thought for the day was, "Sometimes someone says something so small, but it just fits the empty space in your heart." President Margaret Lukey chaired the meeting, and talked about Valentine's day as well as "Good Heart Month". Secretary Kathryn Groshong read the minutes of the last regular meeting as well as the last annual meeting. Treasurer Edith Jacobs gave the monthly and year-end reports. Vice-president Vie Flaten prepared a report on courtesy gifts and cards given throughout the year. Thelap robe project for nursing homes will continue. The robes are 24 by 36 inches in size, and are crocheted, knitted or quilted. Anyone wishing to help are welcome to take part. Slippers can also be knitted for residents in the nursing homes. Fabrics for rugs and other craft materials were taken to the Marian Home in Radville. A summary of club activities in 2006 for the history book were given by historian Ruth Prost: In the past year, two long-time members of the club passed away, May Crump and Bernice LaCoste; the group took part in two charity bazaars at the mall; donations were made to Telemiracle, the United Way, Saskatchewan Abilities, and the Brokenshell 4-H club awards. Interesting programs were held each month and were reported by the convenors of the seven standing committees: agriculture, arts and literature, citizenship and legislation, education and cultural activities, environment, health and home economics, and international relations. The ladies also heard from a guest speaker, Vanessa Santos, a Brazilian exchange student, and Theresa Girardin and Patty Crossweller from Sun Country Health Region did a program on stress management. The trip for the year was to the fish culture station in Fort Qu'Appelle, the Royal Museum in Regina, along with a stop at the Legislative building to see the bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth II on her horse. The Christmas supper and party were enjoyed by members and guests. A pretty apron sewed by May Crump and finished by Nadine Graham was raffled amongst club members, and the luck y winner was Edith Jacobs. The roll call for this meeting was a Valentine gift exchange and an item for the Salvation Army's food bank. A potluck supper followed with husbands as guests, and a video of the comedian Walt Winfield was shown, "A letter from Winfield Farms," which was enjoyed by all. |
