Members of the Penta Gold Wings received their awards and said their final good-byes for the year, as they wrapped up their inaugural Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League season on Sunday. It was a fairly successful season, which started out in mid-August with about 50 girls attending training camp to try out for the team. The Gold Wings finished fifth overall in the standings after the regular season with nine wins, 17 losses, one tie and one overtime loss. The franchise played their first game on Oct. 1 with a 3-2 loss to Swift Current. The team's very first victory came on Oct. 13 as the Gold Wings defeated Battleford 2-1 on the road. In February, they faced off against Prince Albert in the playoffs in a best-of-five series. The Gold Wings picked up one win, while losing two in regulation time and one overtime loss. Overall, many of the players had a great time playing for the Gold Wings and thought the team was a good thing for the community. "I thought it was a great experience to play on a high level team," said assistant captain Anna Steve. "It was really good," said assistant captain Rianne Wight, who was the Gold Wings' top scorer this season. "We had a lot of fun." Players for the Gold Wings came from all over southeastern Saskatchewan and were housed with billets throughout the year. "It was more different than I thought living away from home," Steve said. Head coach Len Williams felt that, with a quality female hockey program in Weyburn, the Gold Wings have a bright future in the community. "Overall, the year went very well," Williams said. "Particularly the acceptance from the community and Weyburn Minor Hockey." William added that if it weren't for the Weyburn Minor Hockey Association and board member Jacquie Williams, the Gold Wings franchise would have never gotten off the ground. The Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA League was formed last fall with eight teams: Weyburn, Regina, Swift Current, Prince Albert, Notre Dame, Saskatoon, Melville and Battleford. "It is a great opportunity for girls to play a high level of hockey just like the boys," said Williams. |
