General maintenance was the main topic at the annual general meeting for the Heritage Village, held Wednesday night at the Signal Hill Arts Centre. More specifically, the board of directors wants to focus on fixing up the newspaper house. Also in need of repair are two broken windows at the church and broken windows at the RNWMP building. The cook house is in need for minor repairs and they are looking at planting the outdoor clay oven into the ground. "We want to put the clay oven into the ground so that it will bake better and it will be a permanent fixture there," said director Marlene Nedelcov. The annual report from 2006 was given, which highlighted some of the Village's events from the past year. Some of these events included: Weyburn's Way opened to the public; four houses were painted; new orientation guides made; the Marin house porch was shingled; a volunteer appreciation barbecue was held; competed in Communities in Bloom; Bake Days were held; RNWMP building featured in RCMP Quarterly magazine; a working calliope was featured during the Heritage Village Weekend and a ghost tour was held. Last year there were a total of 1,371 patrons with about 900 visitors on Heritage Village Days. This included eight schools, Signal Hill Arts Centre summer programs, Estevan Diversified Services, Soo Line Daycare and many other organizations. This year's board of directors are Marlene Nedelcov, Pat Schutz, Murray Keefe, Ed Kuhn, Bev Culbertson and David Carlson. Joan Droulliard-Honig, Ken Fiest, Darcy Dighans and Jim Nedelcov will be 2007 volunteers. More volunteers can join by contacting Marlene Nedelcov. "We will hopefully have a Katimavik student for half-a-day," Marlene said. The village will also be taking on a couple of students to work with them. The Heritage Village is scheduled to open on the May long weekend, but staff will be there the week before getting the village ready for opening day. |
