City police investigate accidents, car vandalism

Weyburn city police investigated three accidents in the city, plus several incidents of vandalism or damages caused to vehicles and a theft in the past week.

The incidents of vandalism mostly involved breaking out of windows in vehicles, plus an incident of a key being used to damage a vehicle on March 20.

In the latter incident, a person called police after witnessing a male person key two vehicles parked on the 10 block of Third Street. After an investigation, a 46-year-old Weyburn man was charged with two counts of mischief causing damages over $5,000. He will make his first court appearance on May 16.

On Friday, a vehicle parked on the 800 block of Souris Avenue was vandalized as the side window was broken out. On Saturday several more vehicles had windows broken out in various locations around the city.

There were two accidents on Friday night and one on Saturday. On Friday, the first accident was around 8 p.m. in the 400 block of Second Street North. A 25-year-old Weyburn woman was north-bound on Second Street when she lost control of her car and hit two others. There were no injuries, but the vehicles sustained around $10,000 in damages.

Then around 8:15 p.m., police attended an accident at Railway Avenue and Third Street where a 17-year-old female from Weyburn and a 25-year-old male were involved. There were no injuries and damages to the vehicles was minimal.

On Sunday evening around 5 p.m., a 17-year-old male lost control of his truck due to his speed, and struck a power pole in the 1500 block of Fifth Avenue North. There were no injuries, with damages estimated at $10,000 The male was charged with driving too fast for conditions.

The police were also called on Sunday with a report that a quad had been stolen some time over night on Saturday. The quad was taken from a driveway at 411 Confederation Drive, and described as a black 2006 Zei with a 70cc engine.

Police ask if anyone has information about the theft or the incidents of vandalism to call the Weyburn Police Service, or call the toll-free Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers tips line at 1-800-222-8477. Callers do not have to reveal their identity, and calls are not recorded or traced.

On Friday morning, police were called to a home in the 10 block of Prairie Avenue, and after an investigation police charged a 40-year-old Weyburn male with unsafe storage of a firearm, and possession of a narcotic. He will make his first court appearance on the charges on April 4.

City police have issued a warning to Weyburn's business community, after businesses in Moose Jaw and Regina have had incidents where a card skimmer was attached to an ATM machine.

"Anyone using an ATM is cautioned to pay close attention to things that appear out of the ordinary, as skimmer devices are often quite discreet," Const. Rod Stafford said.
