Committee sets up legacy project for Royal Bank Cup

The Weyburn Red Wings winning the Royal Bank Cup at home in May of 2005 went a lot further than most might think.

Some of the money raised by hosting the Junior A hockey national championship has been used to benefit city facilities and minor hockey, while leaving a legacy from the Royal Bank Cup.

After the tournament, the money was split between the Red Wings hockey organization and the City. While the Red Wings used their share to pay off long-term debt, the City decided to use the money for the facilities in Weyburn.

Other than the renovations to the Colosseum, the Royal Bank Cup committee decided to take on a legacy project and leave behind memories to be displayed in the community.

The first project was the security vests. They are now available for security and crowd control at hockey games. The final project took place on March 28, when the RBC committee donated a trophy case to the Weyburn Minor Hockey Association.

"That was to create a permanent display about the tournament and to improve minor hockey," said committee chairperson Pat Mahoney.

The display case was built by Winston Bailey, who served as president of the Weyburn Red Wings during their bid for the Royal Bank Cup, and holds memorabilia from the RBC championship as well as minor hockey trophies. It is located along the north wall in the Colosseum lobby.
