Golfer Graham DeLaet of Weyburn played his first Canadian Tour event as a professional, missing the cut by one stroke. The event was the International Open in San Jose, Calif., which ran from Thursday to Sunday, with 155 golfers starting out on the first day. "I didn't play quite how I wanted to. I had a couple bad holes, but it was fun and all the guys out there were great and I'm looking forward to next week," DeLaet said about his first tournament on the Canadian Tour as a professional. In the first round, DeLaet found himself shooting a two-over-par, 38, through nine holes to sit in a tie for 43rd place as he started on the back nine. He dropped his first shot on the par three 11th hole before pulling even with a birdie on the par-five 12th hole. DeLaet then shot bogies on the par-four 13th and par-four 17th. While playing his final nine holes, the round was suspended due to darkness. DeLaet finished up his final nine early Friday morning, shooting even par, 36, but moved up to a tie for 37th place, six shots off of the lead. By hole four, the 13th hole in his round, DeLaet was back to even with birdies on the par-three second and par-four fourth. On the par-three fifth hole, DeLaet dropped a shot but regained it on the par four sixth hole, but shot bogies on the par-four eighth and par-five ninth, the 17th and 18th holes of the round. In the second round, DeLaet finished his first nine holes with a scored to 37, one-over-par, to drop into a tie for 56th place with an overall score of three-over-par. On the par-four first hole, he sank a birdie, but dropped at one-over-par for the round on the fourth hole with a double bogey. After bogeying the fifth hole, DeLaet birdied the ninth hole. On the back nine, DeLaet shot one-over-par to end his round at four-over-par for the tournament, missing the cut by one stroke. DeLaet parred holes 10 and 11 before shooting a triple bogey on 12. DeLaet battled back, however, with a birdie on the par-four 15th hole and the 17th hole. "I hit the ball really well, I just didn't make any putts. I had a couple bad holes in the last round and missed it by one. I really felt I should have made the cut," DeLaet said. The next tournament DeLaet will compete in is the Northern California Classic in Stockton, Calif. from Thursday, April 19 to Sunday, April 22. |
