High School Rodeo to be held at exhibition grounds

The Saskatchewan High School Rodeo is coming to Weyburn on Sunday, May 20 and Monday, May 21. Weyburn will host several rodeo contestants at the Exhibition grounds, starting at noon on Sunday and 9 a.m. on Monday.

Members of the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association (SHSRA) have been traveling all over the province through the rodeo season and now they are coming to Weyburn. Founded in 1991, they have grown to include over 150 rodeo contests, with any student under the age of 20 enrolled full-time in high school eligible to compete.

Students from Grades 6 to 8 are also now allowed to compete. Contestants must maintain grade eligibility and meet behavioral conduct standards set forth by their high school and the SHSRA. Contestants do not compete for money, but instead points that could earn them a spot in the National High School Finals Rodeo where they can win prizes and scholarships.

Attending a High School Rodeo is like none other. A friend or parent is always around the trailer ready to assist visitors. Members of the High School Rodeo Association are like family, always willing to help the contestants in their events, which are more than the standard rodeo events.

There are still the daring rough stock events like bareback riding, saddle bronc-riding and the bull riding. As well there are the precise timed events such as team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and the barrel racing. Not only that, but the High School Rodeo also offers pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, cattle cutting, junior steer riding, ribbon roping and chute dogging.

The cost to attend the rodeo is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
