Souris Valley owners look to begin reno work in July

Weyburn residents looking to see evidence of work on the Souris Valley buildings will have to wait until July, as the company is finishing up details they need to finalize in China and Toronto first.

DistributionCanada.com bought the sprawling historic structure last year with the idea of housing a wholesale operation for goods manufactured in China to be on display for buyers in Canada, but there may be some changes in what the building is used for.

City manager Bob Smith talked with John Lee of the company on May 8, which is the most recent update he's heard from the company.

"He advised that everything's moving along. The project is growing and more companies are coming on board," said Smith, adding that partner Mary Huang was still in China, and was to be there until June 5. The next date Lee mentioned was June 30 as the company wraps things up in Toronto, and the company will be making some financial transactions to provide the resources to the contractors here for work to begin.

"The architects' plans are being completed. He said it will be different from what was first envisioned," said Smith, adding the company has also been dealing with the internal trade department in China, and they have been approved to go on with their enterprise.

Meantime, Smith was asked about the upkeep of the grounds and the condition of the building, and he noted this is the responsibility of the company.

"Our understanding is they have somebody who will be looking after the property," said Smith, adding the city has not yet received any complaints about the property.

If any problems arise with how the property is looked after, the city will treat them the same as if a complaint is lodged against any other unsightly property. The owners are asked to cut the grass and look after it, and if they don't the city will go in and do it and the owners are responsible to cover the bill for the services.
