Judging for this year's Cleanup Campaign was "one of the hardest years we ever had," said Ken Cross, Public Health Inspector for Sun Country Health Region. "There was no garbage anywhere," said Cross. But in the end, only one zone could be declared the most improved from last year. This year, this honour went to Zone 5, which covers the areas east of 16th Street. Close behind in second was Zone 4, which covers the blocks from the downtown area to 16th Street. Due to a lot of new fencing in this area, it was only behind by eight points. Improved from last year was the conditions around the Weyburn Comprehensive School, plus the fact that there were less junk vehicles on residential lots. It was also noted that several residents help keep Weyburn clean by picking up garbage while walking through parks. Some areas that residents will have to improve on for next year include keeping boulevards and lanes around their residence clean, remembering to tarp their load while driving in the city, and poop-scooping after their pets during walks. It was also a tough judging year for the Chamber of Commerce, who did their own business cleanup campaign judging, as several Weyburn businesses have made great efforts to keep their place clean. Aldon Oils placed first in the category of industrial businesses, and the Weyburn Health Centre were first in the category of commercial businesses. From the school level, the poster winners for the cleanup campaign were: In the category of Grades 1 and 2, first place went to Matthew O'Neill, son of Kevin and Verna O'Neill, from St. Dominic School. Second went to Rachel Dempsey, daughter of Leslie Dempsey, from Souris School. The Grades 3 and 4 category's first place award went to Shae-Lynn Bakaluk, daughter of John Bakaluk, from Souris School. Second went to Silkyn Mack, daughter of Aaron and Shannon Mack, from Assiniboia Park. The Grades 5 and 6 category first place award went to Ashlee Adacsi, daughter of Glen and Joan Adacsi, from Queen Elizabeth School. Second was won by Alexis Pederson, daughter of Brian and Kim Pederson, from Queen Elizabeth School. Residential winners within Zone 5 were awarded for their efforts for helping keep their area clean. These included Hartley and Catherine Tessier, Robert and Deana Peterson, Wayne and Kathy Woycik, Bradley and Monique Huebner, Bill and Linda Ferguson, Bernice Haug, Harold and Diana Vanoene and Mel and Norma Hoffman. |
