The Weyburn Young Fellows Club will hold the grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting for their new water spray park on Saturday, June 23, at 11 a.m. at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot. The $150,000 water spray park was completed last week, and began operating on Monday, in conjunction with the opening of the city's paddling pool. The ribbon cutting, which will use the cutting of a soaker hose, and official opening will be at 11 a.m., followed by a hot dog barbecue from 11:30 to 3 p.m. "This is one of our biggest projects ever. This ranks up there with the original swimming pool that our club built in 1931. We're quite proud of it," said Scott Paxman, co-chair of the water spray park committee. "We just hope every family in Weyburn that has small children will make use of it, and use the whole park that is set up there," he added. The Young Fellows Club established the Don Mitchell Tot Lot, naming it after their first club president. The club estimates that with this water spray park, the Young Fellows have invested a total of over $240,000 in the park, with the play structures, basketball net and court, and paddling pool. "We feel that the spray park will be a great addition to our community, and hope that it will be enjoyed by all families in Weyburn," said club president Ron Bartlett. "This project is only possible due to the tremendous support the Young Fellows receive from Weyburn residents and business." Partners in the spray park project include the City of Weyburn, Weyburn Credit Union, Nick Tuchscherer Excavating, Larsen's Construction, Prairie Lightning Electric, John Hulbert Construction and Schmeltzer Construction. In addition, Paxman noted it's also due to the hard work of their members, both present and past, and the support of their projects by the public and businesses, such as of the recent TV Auction fundraiser. "I've had tons of phone calls from families, excited that this is coming. We hope everybody enjoys it," said the co-chair. The Young Fellow Club of Weyburn is an independent service club that is 50 members strong, and is celebrating its 85th anniversary in 2007. Every dollar raised by the Young Fellows is donated back to worthwhile community projects. |
