School gyms can be saved by residents

The South East Saskatchewan Association for Culture, Recreation and Sport (SESACRS) has started encouraging communities in the Weyburn area to start campaigning to save their school gymnasiums.

With school closures in the area imminent, SESACRS will be voicing their concerns about sport, culture and recreation opportunities in rural Saskatchewan to both Prairie Valley School Division and South East Cornerstone School Division.

"Your local community groups that are affected by use of school gymnasium closures should each send a letter to the division," said Angela Englot, of SESACRS. "If the doors are closed, communities would be in a tight situation. The first step is letting the school division know how important those buildings are to the community."

SESACRS has been in contact with both Prairie Valley and Cornerstone school divisions, hoping that options for the facility can be continued to be used by the community, since with the school closed, the school facilities in rural communities are used as recreation, culture or sport facilities.

"We have to increase the awareness to residents that they have to get their voice out to make an impact," said Englot.
