Red Wings sign veteran P. Shupe

The Weyburn Red Wings announced on Wednesday that they have re-signed local talent Preston Shupe for the 2007-2008 SJHL season.

"I'm looking forward to (next season)," said Shupe. "It should be a good one and we have a lot of players coming back."

Last season, Shupe played 47 games with the red-and-white during the regular season, scoring 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points with 53 penalty minutes at the centreman position.

"I think that all the vets will have to show some leadership. We will be losing some of our top scorers, so the forwards have to score some points," Shupe said.

"He is a great character player and he has been brought up that way. He comes to the rink everyday and he is ready to play," said Red Wings head coach Dwight McMillan.

Shupe was hampered last sesason by a wrist injury that occurred during a prospects game in Vernon, B.C. in December, 2006. In the playoffs, Shupe played eight games with three goals and three assists for six points and two penalty minutes.

"It is a pretty big up shot to have Preston coming back. He is a very positive player that you can build your team around," said Red Wings general manager Ron Rumball.

"This is an exciting time for us. He is a big part of our team and has great leadership skills," said McMillan.

The six-foot one-inch 180 pound product of the Weyburn Minor Hockey system is the son of Jesse and Jackie Shupe.
