| Jordan Chuckry, a member of the Fifth Weyburn
Scouts troop, has earned the Chief Scout Award, the highest award
possible in the Scouts Canada program, the first Weyburn scout
to earn this distinction in 20 years. Just finishing up Grade 9 at the Weyburn Junior High, Jordan has been in scouting for 10 years, starting out in Beavers at the age of five. He is the son of Mike and Tara Chuckry of Weyburn. Coming up in July, Jordan and five other scouts will be travelling to Camp Tamaracouta, Que., for the Canadian Jamboree, which will be marking the 100th year of Scouting. There will be thousands of Scouts and Venturers from across Canada gathering for a week of fun and many challenging events. His father, Mike, said his son "loves being in the outdoors, cooking over a fire he's made, hiking, making his own shelter to sleep; for him, the more challenging, the better." He noted when Jordan moved on to Scouts from Cubs at the age of 10, he became a Kim, or a Junior Cub leader. He has done a tremendous amount of volunteer work for his group and for the community. The Chief Scout Award was created in September of 1973 by then-Governor General Roland Michener, who was also then the Chief Scout of Canada. The award represents a phenomenal commitment to the scouting movement, and requires that the individual successfully complete an arduous number of tasks in which the Scout must demonstrate an awareness of the community, the country and international issues. In addition, he must excel in a component of each activity area, including citizenship, leadership, personal development and outdoor skills. Citizenship includes 30 hours of providing leadership to others, in addition to the hours required for the Citizenship Activity area. According to Weyburn Scouts leader Derrick Mooney, "It is indeed a great pleasure to have been a part of Jordan's work towards his Chief Scout Award." Mooney added that looking at Members of Parliament in Canada, Great Britain or Australia, many of the leaders were in Scouts, and of those who were Scouts, 90 per cent of them have earned the Chief Scout or equivalent designation. Jordan is also a member of the Weyburn Wrestling Club, and is looking forward to heading into Grade 10 at the Comp in the fall. He hopes to be able to help start a Venturers group in the fall for those who are now too old for Scouts. |
