The Weyburn Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) office announced its Job Challenge Week, which will be taking place the week of Monday, July 30, to Friday, Aug. 3. This week will give Weyburn and area youth the opportunity to work as a team to develop a business plan early in the week and put into action on Thursday and Friday. These youth will have the freedom in deciding what kind of business they would like to run at the end of the week. If can be anything, including running a lemonade stand, car wash or burger stand. Youth can sign up for this week either as part of a team or as an individual and will have a team provided for them. They can do so by visiting the SCCY office on the second floor of the City Centre Mall. "This week will be a valuable learning opportunity for Weyburn's youth," said Brandon Sletten, Youth Services Officer. "It will teach them that you can take initiative regardless of what your age is." The students at the Weyburn office will even meet head to head against those who register at the Estevan office on a Job Challenge Day, taking place on Wednesday, Aug. 1. During this day, each office will be urging their community to hire local youth for full and part-time positions as well as casual jobs. The community with the most job orders at the end of the day will be declared the winner. "We are hoping that this day will promote community involvement within each of our cities as we attempt to provide job opportunities for these local youth," said Lindsay Manko, Youth Services Officer. Manko and Sletten will also be hosting a "Pass the Pie" event, in which they will be going around to local businesses and community members with a pie. The employer will be asked to place a job order with SCCY, or will have to successful answer three skill-testing questions on labour market information. If they are unable to do so, they will receive a pie in the face. If, however, the employer is successful they will be able to "Pass the Pie" on to another business or local resident. For more information on placing a job order, contact Lindsay Manko and Brandon Sletten, Youth Services Officers, at Weyburn Service Canada Centre for Youth. |
