New sign revealed

A new sign proclaiming that Weyburn is the home of Tommy Douglas, 'The Greatest Canadian', is revealed just outside McTaggart, heading south on Highway 39. In 2004, Tommy Douglas received the coveted title of "Greatest Canadian" from a CBC contest. Douglas is credited with the title of "Father of Medicare" for starting the program in Saskatchewan. Douglas lived in Weyburn during the Depression before entering a life of politics as an MP for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), now known as the New Democrat Party (NDP). Advocates of Douglas, and the Tommy Douglas Centre here in Weyburn, helped reveal the sign on Wednesday, from left to right they are John Nolan, Ron Wormsbecker, Alice Neufeld, Betty Yeaman, April Sampson and Melanie Adderley.

Caught in a corner

Pigs trying to get away from being caught in a pig scramble at the Creelman Fair get caught in a corner, allowing the participating children to take a chance to try to make a grab. The pig scramble was one of the more popular events held at the Creelman Fair, on Saturday, and there were several levels of competition so everyone had a chance to participate. It was the 103rd year of celebration for the Creelman Fair, with a pancake breakfast, parade, horse and dog shows, exhibits and plenty of other events for participants to enjoy under the hot summer sun. Temperatures reached 31 degrees, encouraging people to get out and have summer fun at the fair.
