Lori Boyle of Moose Jaw and Gary Tuffs of North Battleford were winners of the Provincial Senior Men's Golf Championship, which ran from July 24-26 at the Weyburn Golf Club.

The top four finishes in the men's and women's competition made up the provincial teams. The senior men's provincial team will consist of Tuffs, Bill Cameron, Ken Bradley and Daryl Herchuk.

The ladies provincial team will be Boyle, Laura Small, Shari Forsythe-Hohm and Vickie Lamb.

In the end, golf course manager Bill Rudachyk was really happy with how smoothly the tournament was run. He did feel that weather did play a factor in the championship.

"We had a little bit of everything, from the hottest day we've had out here in our history to rain and cold to a beautiful day," Rudachyk commented. On July 24, the temperature got up to 42 degrees and Wednesday golfers had to play through the rain, while Thursday was a perfect final day for golfing.

The Saskatchewan Golf Association program co-ordinator Brian Lee was really happy with how well the tournament was put together in Weyburn.

"The Weyburn Golf Club and the City of Weyburn were excellent. The volunteers worked hard, as did the chairpeople Jim Pennington and Gloria Scaddan," Lee said. "Bill Rudachyk did an excellent job prior to (the tournament)."

Many of the golfers who took part in the tournament last week echoed Lee's comments on how good of an event the volunteers put together.

"The volunteers were absolutely incredible in helping us out," said Boyle.

On Thursday, the final day of competition, Norm DeLaet was the top Weyburn golfer with a round of 13-over-par 85. Dennis Lizuck and Rudachyk were tied for 25th place at 35-over-par. Rudachyk had a round of 10-over-par 82 and Lizuck shot a seven-over-par 79.

Tuffs shot a five-over-par 221 over three days, with a one-over-par 73 of the final day. He described winning his first Senior Men's Provincial Championship as "fantastic."

Overall, Tuffs enjoyed playing Weyburn's course last week and thought Weyburn was a good host.

"They treated us good. The course was a little bit dry, but it was in good condition for the weather you have had," Tuffs said.

The top four rounded out with Cameron, Bradley and Herlick all tied for second place with a stroke total of 224 eight-over-par. Because three players were tied for second, a playoff wasn't needed.

For the final day of the women's competition, Cheryl Rommann was the top Weyburn golfer in 11th place at 42-over-par 258. In the final round she shot a 19-over par 91. Terry Creurer of Weyburn finished in 15th place at 57-over-par 273. She shot a 22-over-par 94 in the final round.

Boyle won the tournament with a score of 10-over-par 226. She shot a nine-over-par 81 in the final round. Although she had a disappointing final round, Boyle was happy about winning her second straight title.

"I'm excited. My first two rounds went well, but today I had some troubles and skulled a couple of wedge shots," Boyle said.

"I understand you haven't had much water, but the greens were in good shape and you had to keep it in play with the tight fairways."

Small placed second at 21-over-par 237 and Forsythe-Hohm came in third at 24-over-par 240. Lamb rounded out the provincial team in fourth place at 29-over-par 245.

DeLaet was the top Weyburn golfer for the men after round two of the Championship. He sat in 15th place at 11-over-par after shooting a four-over-par 77. DeLaet shot a 39 on the front nine and 38 on the back nine.

Rudachyk sat in a tie for 26th at 22-over-par after shooting a nine-over-par 81. He shot an even-par 36 on the front half of the course, but shot a 45 on the back nine.

Lizuck ended the round in 29th place at 25-over-par. He shot a round of 11-over-par 83 after taking a 41 on the first nine holes and 42 on the backside of the course. Obst withdrew from the tournament in the second round.

A new name was on top of the leaderboard for the men as Dwight Kearns of Brandon, Man. took the lead at three-over par. Tied for second was Herchuk, Tuffs and Eric Sprigings, all at four-over-par.

On day two, Rommann was still the top female Weyburn golfer in eighth position at 23-over-par. For her second round, Rommann shot a 41 on the front nine and a 45 on the back nine to end the round at 14-over-par.

Creurer was only in 15th place after the second round at 35-over-par. She shot 42 on the front nine and 46 in the back nine to shoot 16-over-par 88 for the round.

Boyle extended her lead on day two shooting an even-par 72 to remain at one-over-par. In second was Small with a two-day score of 13-over-par after a round of four-over-par 76. Lamb was sitting in third, also at 13-over-par, after shooting eight-over-par 80.

Day one wrapped up on July 24th with the top Weyburn golfer being DeLaet in 13th place at six-over-par. DeLaet shot a four-over-par 40 on the front nine and a two-over-par 38 on the back nine.

Rudachyk was in 26th place at 13-over-par after shooting 41 on the front nine and 44 on the back nine. Lizuck was tied for 27th place at 14 over-par, shooting a 41 on the front nine and 45 on the back nine.

Ken Obst was tied for 32st place at 20-over-par. Obst shot a 45 on the front nine and 47 on the back nine.

The leader after day one was Gerald Adamson from Regina at even-par followed by Cameron and Eric Sprigings of Saskatoon tied for second at one-over-par.

On the ladies side, the top Weyburn golfer was Cheryl Rommann who was tied for fourth at nine-over-par. Rommann shot a six-over-par 41 on the front nine and a three-over-par 40 on the back nine.

Creurer was in 15th place at 19-over-par after shooting a 45 on the front nine and 46 on the back nine.

The leader of the ladies championship after day one was Boyle at one-over-par, followed by Forsythe-Hohm in second at four-over-par and Lamb in third at five-over-par.

The Senior Men's National Golf Championship will take place Tuesday, Sept. 4, to Friday, Sept. 7, in Peterborough, Ont. The Senior Women's National Championship will be from Monday, Aug. 20, to Thursday, Aug. 23, in Waskesia Lake, Sask.
