The Weyburn Service Canada Centre for Youth (SCCY) office finished their job challenge week, making it a success with the support of Weyburn youth and employers. "The goal of this week was to help students understand what it is like to make their own opportunities," said Lindsay Manko, Weyburn Youth Services Officer. "With the help and support from Sunrise Community Futures and our youth officers, students made business plans and spearheaded their own initiatives on Thursday and Friday." Team Karjarkelmic held a successful barbecue, BA Sales had a thriving juice stand and HA Inc. worked hard at manufacturing hemp bracelets to sell. "All the students worked hard and were duly rewarded for their planning and effort," said Manko. "They also left the challenge with new insight into what it takes to run a business. It was a great lesson for these students to leave the summer with." The Weyburn SCCY office also competed in "Job Challenge Day" against the Estevan SCCY office on August 1. Each office invited local community members to call in with job orders for the youth. It was a tough race throughout the day, but both offices finished the day with a grand total of 35 positions posted, the first tie in the competition's history. As incentive for placing a job order with the Weyburn SCCY office, employers were eligible for a grand prize of $100 in fuel vouchers and two second prize gift certificates at Co-op. Gabe Vogel of Mad Dog Trucking won the grand prize and Mickey's Café and Main Track Café won the gift certificates for their job orders. Brandon Sletten, Weyburn Youth Services Officer said, "We are happy to be having such a successful summer in the Weyburn SCCY office. With 107 young people registered and roughly 180 positions posted with SCCY, it has been a busy and rewarding summer." Sletten mentioned that there are "many full and part-time positions leading into the school year for any students who are interested in continuing to work throughout the fall as well." |
