Weyburn area producers start on harvest operations

The main focus for many producers in the Weyburn area right now is getting their harvest in, with harvest operations going quite well, according to a local producer. Harvest operations were pushed forward due to the heat received in June and July, with the recent rain allowing producers to catch up on operations.

Though the rain arrived past the point where it can assist early-seeded crops, it did aid a little for later-seeded crops and the swathing operations of canola fields. "The recent moisture can't hurt anything," said area producer Jeff Gaab, "and though it put a hold on harvest operations, it was all right since harvest operations can be held for a bit."

Harvesting operations for winter wheat in the Weyburn area is pretty much finished, with peas also going quite well, some early barley is being harvested, and swathing of canola and lentil crops is proceeding. Gaab said that so far, "I am quite satisfied with the yield of my crops, especially the winter wheat and peas. The crops are looking good, I am happy with what I see."

After dealing with a lot of heat to the crops, Gaab said, "I have not seen a lot of yield reductions, but that may come later when some of the later-seeded crops are harvested."
