Although their teams didn't have very good showings, Brayden Rudy and Jon Neuberger were proud to represent Saskatchewan at their respective tournaments. Second baseman Neuberger participated in the Canada Cup in Quebec City from Aug. 8-12 alongside his fellow Midget Beavers teammate Derek Geisler. "It was my third year (with Team Saskatchewan). It was good to play against every province this time instead of just British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba," Neuberger said. Geisler pitched in two games, ending up with a record of 1-1. He pitched seven innings, giving up three hits, six runs, 11 walks and four strike-outs. Neuberger went three for 16 at the plate during the tournament, picking up one double, two singles, three walks, one stolen base and struck out twice. As a batter, Neuberger faced some of the most difficult pitching he had ever faced, including pitchers who could throw 90 miles an hour. "There was one kid pitching for Ontario who could throw 94 mph," Neuberger said. "It was difficult at first, but after a while you got used to it." Overall, Neuberger enjoyed his experience in Quebec City. One of the highlights for him was experiencing university life, as he will be graduating from the Weyburn Comprehensive School this upcoming school year. "I liked staying in the dorms at the college," Neuberger said. "It was a good atmosphere stepping onto the field as well with the crowd very upbeat." Team Saskatchewan went through the round robin with four wins and two losses before dropping the bronze medal game to Ontario 9-2. Rudy competed with Team Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Games with Midget Beavers teammate Taylor Van De Sype, where they picked up the bronze medal. Rudy played left field, was two for seven at the plate and was called upon to pinch run once. Van De Sype was at the catcher position and was three for 10 at the plate. Overall, Rudy felt this tournament was a great way to meet players from other provinces. "We met players from British Columbia, who we never see during the season," Rudy said. In the round robin, Saskatchewan lost all three of their games, but rebounded when it counted to defeat Manitoba 4-2 to bring home the bronze medal. |
