Gymnastics club starts fall with new Elgin Mall home

The Weyburn Gymnastics Club will be celebrating the grand opening of their new location at Elgin Mall on Thursday, Oct. 25. Fall season has already started for staff and students, and gym coordinator Krissy Cleasby said that everyone "really likes our new gym space, it is bigger and better."

There is a lot to prepare for their grand opening right now, as the Gymnastics Club is going to have fundraisers to purchase a new vault table and safety mats, as well as looking for more coaches and running a contest for a new gym name and gym logo.

The first priority will be a "Cookie Crumbles" fundraiser, while will run from Monday, Sept. 4 to Thursday, Sept. 27. Since there is a bigger gym space and the gymnastics club requires more safety mats, updated equipment, rent and day-to-day upkeep, Cleasby stated that the club is "also looking for sponsors who want to donate equipment to the club."

Sponsors who have already assisted the Weyburn Gymnastic Club in the last couple of years include Ar-Dee Consulting, EnCana, Great Plains Ford, Hydrodig, Jerry Mainil Ltd., Laredo Well Servicing, Redcoat Chrysler, Royal Purple, Scotia Bank, Weyburn Credit Union and Ziolkowski Construction.

There are other ways to help the club besides donating as well, as the Weyburn Gymnastics Club are looking for board members, coaches and assistant coaches. To ensure that all gym members have a good experience, Cleasby said that coaches are a priority right now "and anyone who is Level One certified can come on down to get more information on being a coach."

At their grand opening, which will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, there will be cake, balloons and a free play for residents. The winner of the "Name the Gym Club" and the "Design a Logo" contest will also be announced, with the winner of each earning a gymnastic party for eight people.

Also new this year is the Competitive Group that will be attending competitions in the winter and spring. This class will be giving a group display at the grand opening of the new location on Oct. 25.

Then in November the club will be holding their "In Good Taste" fundraiser, from Monday, Nov. 5 to Thursday, Nov. 22. "It is important to continue to fund-raise for the general upkeep of our new location and to keep class costs down for our students," said Cleasby.

The first class of the fall season for the gymnastics club will take place starting Monday, Sept. 10. At this time students will go through an orientation and safety season. "Throughout the fall session we will have different themed classes such as bring a buddy day," said Cleasby. "The fall season runs for 12 weeks and it will be a lot of fun for everyone who joins."
