The Weyburn Junior High School has a new extracurricular group, called the Cobra Squad Leadership Council, created with 19 Grade 8 and 9 students along with staff advisors Nathan Bromm and Karla Warren. The purpose of the group in its first pilot year will be to create activities and challenges for the Cobra Squads. All events will be designed to encourage participation of all students and points will be awarded to the squads based on their effort, participation and enthusiasm. Those who are on the council will get the opportunity to be positive role models and leaders while building school spirit, and the rest of the student body will get the opportunity to build relationships across grades within their squads. The council will also create activities that not only create spirit and competition, but contribute to the school and community. Last year saw the creation of six Cobra Squads and the design of chants, mottos and murals, along with activities at assemblies and activity day. Now that the murals are complete, they will be mounted in the gym hallway, soon to be known as Cobra Squad Hall. The hall has been painted and an accordion gate has been installed to extend the gym foyer into the hall and benches and garbage will soon be added. Cobra Squad Hall will provide a place for the council to post squad points, upcoming events and candid pictures from the events. It will also be used as an expanded canteen area for sporting events and dances. Upcoming events for the Cobra Squad Leadership Council include an induction of the Grade 7's and new students into squads, Clash of the Cans, the Big Game and the In-Motion Challenge. |
