Donations accepted for Nigerian hospital

Weyburn residents who would like to help out with a project of visiting specialist Dr. Amos Akinbiyi, who is gather resources together to build a women's hospital in Nigeria, will now have a way to get the donations to him.

Dr. Akinbiyi is an obstetrician and gynecologist who provides his specialized services at the Weyburn General Hospital, and is a native of Nigeria where he is working to establish a hospital to treat the poor women in his home city of Ibadan.

Anyone who would like to contribute funds or materials towards his project can contact either Corinne Ward or Stella Swertz, who are nurses who work with him in the Operation Room at the Weyburn hospital.

To build the hospital, he will need about $500,000, of which he has already raised $120,000, not including the material gifts he has received from many here, including the Sun Country Health Region. The health authority has given him hospital beds and linens, and various pieces of equipment that he can use in the hospital.

He is also going to hold a fundraising dinner in Regina, at Ipsco Place, on Monday, Oct. 1, an evening that will feature Canadian Idol singer Matt Rapley. Tickets for this dinner are still available, and cost $75 each.
