The Weyburn Review won a total of eight awards, presented at the annual convention for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association held over the weekend in Saskatoon, with three first-place awards, including for best overall newspaper. The awards were presented to publisher Darryl Ward and Managing Editor Patricia Ward. Two of the first-place awards were in the General Excellence category in which the newspaper as a whole is judged, with awards given for Best Overall Paper in Class C, for the circulation category of 3,500-6,499, and for Best Front Page, from the Sept. 20 edition. This was the second year in a row for the Review to win the Best Overall Paper award. First place also went to news editor Greg Nikkel for Best Post-Secondary Story, for his story on the affordability of post-secondary education from the Dec. 20 issue. Nikkel also won second place for Best Sports Photo, for a photo of a silhouetted skateboarder in midair, while reporter Shawn Slaght won second for Best Sports Story, for a feature on golfer Graham DeLaet turning pro, from the Aug. 30 edition. The Review placed third for Best Editorial Page in the General Excellence category, and third place was also awarded for Best Habitat Conservation story, for a story by Greg Nikkel about the "Wildlife Tomorrow" program in the Weyburn area from July 19. A photo essay on the Weyburn Wheat Festival from 2006 also earned Nikkel a third-place prize for Best Photo Essay, from the Aug. 16 edition. |
