The Weyburn Credit Union Atom Eagles finished up their season Saturday with a 28-21 win over the Regina Cardinals for seventh place the Regina Minor Football Playoff Bowl. The Cardinals scored on their opening offensive play, but the Atom Eagles settled down and scored an 85-yard touchdown. "It was an awesome game. They were excited about playing the game, but we were able to come back," said coach Tyler Metheral Their first score was set up with good blocking by Justin Dreis and Regan Nagy to spring the speedy Jarrett Metheral free on a 85-yard run. Two passes and run plays from quarterback Reece Williams to brother Rhett scored the second major. A broken play taken by offensive game star Jarrett Metheral, the running back, made something out of nothing scampering and fighting his way 43 yards for the Eagles third touchdown. The Cardinals came back to take the lead in the fourth quarter, but the rookie Eagles team never quit, driving the length of the field to score on a quarterback keeper behind the award-winning offensive line of Cam Evans, Harley Johnston, Tyler Kwochka, Matt Mondor, Chance Kenway, Kyle Martin and Justin Dreis. The Eagles defence had everyone on the stats sheet with a tackle or assisted tackle. Terrence Miller, in his first game on defence, made some key tackles and moves to keep the Cardinals from running to the outside. Defensive game stars Quinten Ruckaber led the way with 10 tackles and Nick Zerie had six tackles. Dakken Bedore and Logan Mainil each had two tackles and safety Konrad Proszak had two tackles. The D-line award winners were Dylan Nielson, Drew Fellner, Nigel Rempel and Baillie Koszman. The Atom Eagles finished their regular season with a pair of losses at home. On Sept. 15, Weyburn had a slow start allowing the Regina Badgers to score 26 points in the first half. The Eagles defence shut down the Badgers after half time. The rookie offence could not move the ball against a very strong Badgers defence. Award winners for the 26-0 loss were Nigel Rumpel, Tristan Rubin, Nick Zerie, Konrad Proszak, Jarret Metheral and Rhett Williams. The last home game on Sept. 22 was against the second place Regina Bears as the Eagles fell 9-0. This was a defensive battle, with the Weyburn defence coming to play. Defensive star Nigel Rempel lead the team with two sacks and a fumble recovery at the end of the contest to give the Eagles a shot at winning. Jarrett Metheral, captain of the defense, led the team with tackles and assists along with Drew Fellner, Quinten Ruckaber and Dakken Bedore. Playing a new position, Logan Mainil had a strong game. Rhett Williams gave the Bears backfield everything they could handle. Tarrin Stepp was the game's "skull" award winner for stand-out player. The offence, led by quarterback Justin Dreis, moved the ball on the ground with running back Tristan Rubin and tailback Nick Zerie running behind offensive linemen Matt Mondor, Tyler Kwochka, Kyle Martin, Chance Kenway and Harley Johnston. In the air, Regan Nagy caught passes for major gains. "We'll take that, if every game was like that, it was great," commented Tyler Metheral. Overall, Tyler Metheral felt the first season with the Atom Eagles was very successful and looks forward to next year. He though his team played hard all year and showed a lot of heart. "The kids involved really took in my different style. I ask for a lot of respect because if someone is not doing their job, someone can get hurt. They show respect to myself and their teammates," he said. |
